This is the first episode of the year of our podcast “The world of Fund Selection” conducted by Carla Solera, Investor Relations Specialist at RankiaPro Europe.
In this first episode of the year of the world of fund selection titled “The importance of culture when selecting external managers” we had Pieter Laan, Head of External Manager selection at IBS Capital, talking about what it is important when selecting a fund, and why Manager Selection is one of the best jobs he can think of.
“I must admit the job itself (Manager Selection) is one of the best jobs I can think of, everyday is different as markets go in all kinds of directions, and we get the opportunity to meet and speak to the best managers worldwide”
“The most important areas we look at (when selecting a fund) are Investment philosophy, ESG, performance, and Investment Culture. For instance with regards to Investment philosophy we always look for something that sets the manager apart from the rest of the market, that could be that the investment team is the largest, or that they are have the strongest team or the most experienced.”
“I do see differences between the two (Boutique asset managers and Large asset management companies) but I think there is not straight answer that either the smaller or the larger manager always have a better investment culture, and therefore better investment performance numbers.”Pieter Laan, Head of External Manager Selection at IBS Capital Allies
